sotx bjj

Professor Victor Garza is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt, a highly decorated United States Marine Corps combat veteran, and founder of SOTX Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. SOTX BJJ was founded on the vision that discipline and structure lead to achievement and success. With this philosophy in mind, SOTX BJJ is on a mission to help people achieve far past their perceived potential through the discipline of jiu jitsu.

Professor Victor Garza began the journey to his black belt in Temecula, California under Professor Ricardo Guimaraes of Gracie Humaita, later transferring to NOLA BJJ and studying under Professor Mathias Meister in New Orleans, Louisiana. After intensively training and studying in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Professor Victor Garza opened SOTX BJJ in Edinburg, Texas.

What began as a one man operation has now expanded to a team of dedicated instructors helping develop youth and adult into athletes and leaders through Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

About Us
Training

kids 4-8 years

Our Little Learners program is designed specifically for kids ages 4-8 years old. Our curriculum goals are to build coordination, agility, and learn the fundamentals of jiu jitsu. Classes are 45 minutes to 1 hour long and will involve a variety of warm-up activities, drills, fun games, and the cultivation of core values. Along with fundamental movements in jiu jitsu, young students learn the importance of discipline, confidence, and respecting their instructors and peers. Our little learners class is led by Professor Victor Garza and an assistant instructor.

kids 9-13 years

Our Young Champs program has been created for kids ages 9-13 years old. Our curriculum presents our students to all positions of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and advanced techniques to continue building coordination. At this age, many of our students are encouraged to participate in competitive jiu jitsu, and our curriculum prepares them with situation specific movements. Along with training, students gain self-defense techniques, anti-bullying training, confidence building and a reinforcement of values like respecting their peers.

Our Adult Jiu Jitsu program is comprised by two levels: Fundamentals & Advanced Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Through our fundamentals program, students are introduced to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu movements, positions and techniques all practitioners should know. Our curriculum also helps build the student's coordination. This class is recommended for beginners but is open to all belt classes. Our advanced class offers in depth, higher level techniques and movements for less common situations and practices a competitive approach.

WHY JIU JITSU?

For both children and adults, the sport of jiu jitsu is comparable to a fast paced solving of physical equations to achieve submissions. Unlike many traditional team sports, jiu jitsu has a never ending season that is not weather dependent, and highly promotes personal and athletic development. Our mats are packed with students and no child sits on the bench. All students get equal play time and develop their athletic potential through their own commitment. Jiu Jitsu helps develop a child's discipline and dedication by enforcing the idea that through practice, patience and focus you can achieve higher ranks and perfect movements. While a naturally athletic child may quickly excel in this sport, the foundation of jiu jitsu is focused on the idea that size and strength doesn't always mean victory. We often find that our smaller students bloom to become technicians of the sport and conquer competition. This type of individual success often boosts a child confidence and hard work. We highly encourage our students both children and adults to participate in competitions which can range from local to international. Jiu Jitsu can be used as a way to learn self defense techniques, weight control, competition, and because of the high sense of community, it can ultimately become a lifestyle.

Why Jiu Jitsu?

SERVING OUR VETERANS

SOTX BJJ is committed to giving back to the amazing men and women who have served our country. Through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, many veterans across the country are finding the sense of camaraderie, support, and utilizing their warrior mentality to advance the ranks of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in their civilian life. Through our affiliation with Veterans Jiu-Jitsu, SOTX BJJ welcomes ALL military veterans to train in a stress-free environment alongside other veterans in our noon classes free of charge. While we are the only Rio Grande Valley facility affiliated with Veteran's Jiu-Jitsu, our class has evolved into an international community of veterans and active service members who share time on and off the mats.

In addition, SOTX BJJ is an approved We Defy Foundation Training Facility.
